Why do private universities attract more students? - Koçibellinj: More

Private universities are increasingly gaining ground compared to public ones. According to statistics, if we compare the 2025-2026 academic year with the 2021-2022 academic year, the number of students enrolled in private higher education has increased by 18.3%.

Activist Suela Koçibellinj lists some of the reasons that influence this choice of young people.

"Young people are looking for somewhat more comfortable conditions and private universities offer them. So, they can offer smaller groups, warmer environments, but perhaps also more modern tools than in our public universities. It is positive that there are private universities and young people have the opportunity to choose. Here, the attention of institutions should be drawn to what public universities are not doing well, how they should improve the service, how they should be close to the offer and timely update with the needs of how the curricula should be. One of the reasons why good students prefer private universities is the study scholarships. They attract good students themselves. We at the state university have measures for vulnerable categories, but excellent students are not evaluated properly", says Koçibellinj.

However, Koçibellinj is skeptical about several elements, including academic quality.

"There may also be room for abuse regarding private universities, and here I would like the attention of state institutions regarding the control and quality of service provision, teaching, scientific work, and not to see private universities as a way to buy diplomas, as in our reality we have seen such experiences, where private universities are seen as an opportunity to finish work and have a diploma. The diploma is what should prove your knowledge and skills and cannot be the short path to finishing work. Private universities should have a qualitative ranking, but also strong controls ," says Koçibelinj.

Also, according to the activist, private universities approach high school graduates, offer them their programs, introduce them to the conditions, staff, and class hours, while public universities are indifferent when it comes to presenting the offer, and have weaker connections to the labor market.
