British investment of 1.6 million pounds for border security - 11 customs points

The Minister of Finance, Petrit Malaj, together with the Director General of Customs, Besmir Beja, and the Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Albania, Nicholas Abbott, closely inspected the new investments made at the Bllata Customs Branch to modernize border monitoring and control systems.

During the visit, Minister Malaj emphasized the importance of British support in strengthening the capacities of the customs administration and increasing security at border crossing points.

"This is a significant investment funded by the United Kingdom through the Home Office, which extends to 11 customs points in the country and has a value of 1.6 million pounds. The project directly contributes to the modernization of border control infrastructure and the improvement of security standards ," Malaj declared.

According to customs authorities, the project has brought about a significant technological advancement in the monitoring of border movements. The Director General of Customs, Besmir Beja, announced that as part of this initiative, 121 advanced technology cameras have been installed at various border points.

"Thanks to this investment, we have significantly increased our operational capacities. The new systems enable us to monitor border movements more efficiently, while simultaneously guaranteeing higher security and faster procedures for citizens and businesses," said Beja.

For his part, British Ambassador Nicholas Abbott described the project as concrete evidence of the close cooperation between Albania and the United Kingdom in the field of border security and the fight against illegal activities.

"This initiative represents a successful example of partnership between our two countries. The results so far show that our cooperation is yielding concrete effects in strengthening border control and increasing institutional capacities," said Abbott.

The project is being carried out in collaboration with the British institutions Home Office International Operations and HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). In addition to modern camera systems, it also includes automatic number plate reading technology, which helps to identify high-risk vehicles and more effectively monitor cross-border movements.

According to the authorities, new technologies will contribute to the fight against illegal trafficking, smuggling and cases of undeclared money transportation, further strengthening security at Albania's borders and cooperation with international partners.
