Albania joins regional initiative for safer transport against climate risks

Albania has become part of a regional agreement aimed at strengthening the resilience of transport infrastructure to the impacts of climate change. The document was signed in Helsinki, Finland, by representatives of road and rail authorities of the Western Balkan countries.
Our country was represented in this initiative by the administrator of the Albanian Railways, Ergys Verdho, who signed the agreement together with his counterparts from the region.
The initiative aims to promote a new approach to transport infrastructure management, prioritizing preventive measures and increasing the sustainability of road and rail networks, instead of interventions after damage has occurred.
The meeting presented data showing that a significant part of the region's transport infrastructure faces increasing risks from extreme weather events. According to estimates, around half of the Trans-European Transport Corridor (TEN-T) road network and around a third of the rail network are exposed to floods, high temperatures and landslides.
Representatives of the participating countries agreed to intensify cooperation to identify risk areas, improve strategic planning, and direct investments towards projects that guarantee a more sustainable and safer infrastructure.
The discussions highlighted that addressing the challenges posed by climate change requires greater coordination between public institutions, transport operators and international partners. The aim is for road and rail networks to be better prepared to cope with extreme events that are expected to become more frequent in the coming years.
Participants assessed that investments in climate change prevention and adaptation bring long-term benefits, reducing the economic and social costs caused by infrastructure damage after natural disasters.
