Milot-Balldren, 850-meter tunnel to bypass Lezha - Details of the project for

As the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy announced the winning consortium for the Milot - Balldren road segment, the accompanying documents of the procedure provide details on the project that is expected to provide a solution to the traffic that is created near Lezha, especially during the tourist season.

This axis will have a length of about 17 km and will be built according to the standards of a category A highway, with two carriageways, two traffic lanes in each direction and emergency lanes. The project also includes bridges, junctions, service roads, intelligent traffic monitoring systems and toll infrastructure.

One of the most important works of the project is the construction of a two-tube tunnel, which will enable the bypass of the city of Lezha. According to the technical characteristics published in the documentation, each tube of the tunnel will have a length of 850 meters. The tunnel is part of the new segment to be built between the Drini Bridge and Balldren, where there is currently no road infrastructure.

The documents argue that the existing road connecting Miloti with Balldren passes through the city of Lezha and faces frequent congestion, especially during the summer season, when the flow of vehicles towards the tourist areas of Shëngjin, Tale and Velipoja increases significantly. The construction of the new axis aims to increase traffic capacity, reduce travel time and improve road safety.

The project also foresees an alternative toll-free route, which should be located near the highway, so that users have a choice even in the case of a toll road.

This road segment is one of the main links of the Adriatic-Ionian Corridor in the Albanian territory. The project, with an estimated value of almost 365 million euros excluding VAT, will be financed by the private sector and foresees the design, construction, operation, maintenance and transfer of the axis for a period of 35 years. The winner of the concession was announced as a consortium consisting of 4 companies, more specifically Salillari, ALB TIEFBAU” sh.pk, “ERALD-G” sh.pk and “InfraKonsult” sh.pk
