Tirana "gained" over 5 thousand inhabitants in one year/ 11 regions decreased. Kukës and Shkodra lost more inhabitants

Albania's population continues to shrink, but is increasingly concentrated in the capital. In contrast, all other regions have lost residents, confirming not only the impact of emigration, but also the continuous movement of the population towards the country's economic center.
The Tirana region recorded a 0.7% population increase during 2025, adding over 5,400 residents and reaching around 765 thousand residents. The growth is mainly related to internal migration, as the capital continues to attract residents from other regions thanks to greater opportunities for employment, education and services.
On the other side of the table are the northern regions, which continue to face the strongest demographic decline. Kukës lost 2.59% of its population over the course of a year, ranking as the region with the largest population decline in the country. It is followed by Shkodra with 2.56% and Lezha with 2.54%, while Korça and Fier also recorded declines of over 2%.
Analysis by gender shows that the population decline has been strongest among males. At the national level, the number of males fell by 1.3%, while that of females by 1.02%. This phenomenon is partly related to the fact that emigration continues to be dominated by males, who leave more often for employment reasons. At the same time, internal movements and changes of residence after marriage affect the distribution of the female population between regions, making their decline somewhat more moderate.
The sharpest decline for men was recorded in Shkodër, Kukës and Fier, while for women the largest contraction was observed in the northern regions, especially in Kukës and Lezha. This shows that peripheral areas are simultaneously losing both the young workforce and the population in general.
The data confirms a trend that has become increasingly evident in recent years. Albania is losing residents across most of its territory, while Tirana is concentrating an increasingly large portion of the population. As a result, demographic differences between regions are deepening, creating new challenges for the economic and social development of the areas that are emptying out the most.
