The total number of employees fell slightly during 2025/ Wage earners and self-employed people increase, while family work decreases
The employment structure in Albania has changed during 2025, with the main trend being an increase in the share of salaried employees and a contraction of traditional forms of work. According to data for the 15-64 age group, the number of employed people has decreased from 1,057,383 people in 2024 to 1,042,085 people in 2025, reflecting a slight decrease in total employment.
However, within this category, there is a significant shift in the way employment is distributed. Salaried employees are the largest category and have continued to grow, representing 52.6% of employees in 2025, up from 50% in 2024. This growth indicates a greater orientation towards jobs where individuals receive a regular payment.
The strongest change has been among unpaid workers in family businesses. This category has fallen significantly, from 25.1% in 2024 to 18.2% in 2025, losing nearly 7 percentage points in one year. The decline shows that some of the work that previously relied on unpaid family activities is being replaced by other forms of employment.
At the same time, self-employment without paid employees has increased, from 21.4% to 25%. The category of self-employed with dependent employees has also expanded, from 3.5% to 4.2%, indicating an increase in the number of people creating or expanding their economic activities.
The data show that 2025 brings a labor market with less reliance on unpaid family work and more focus on paid employment and independent economic activities. Although the total number of employees has decreased, the changing structure indicates a transformation in the way Albanians engage in the labor market.
