Karakaçi: Albania aims for Gigabit society with investments in modern networks and 5G coverage

The Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Enea Karakaçi, stated that Albania is harmonizing the development of electronic communications networks with European Union standards, with the aim of building a Gigabit society by 2030.
During the presentation of the initiative for the development of underground infrastructure in urban areas, Karakaçi said that the objective is to extend modern fiber optic networks to the end user and expand coverage with 5G technology throughout the territory.
According to the minister, the government has completed the legal framework for the development of high-capacity networks, aligning Albanian legislation with the European Electronic Communications Code. He also mentioned the new draft law on Gigabit infrastructure, which is awaiting approval by the European Commission.
Karakaçi announced that through the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF), Albania has secured a project worth 110 million euros, of which about 35 million euros are a grant from the European Union. The investment aims to extend broadband networks to unserved areas, known as "white zones", to guarantee high-speed internet access and digital services throughout the country.
The Minister added that the European Union is also supporting the increase in the capacities of municipalities for the development of broadband networks, while emphasizing that the realization of the vision for a Gigabit society requires close cooperation between central institutions, local government and operators, as well as continuous investments in digital infrastructure.
