Demo: Moving cables to underground infrastructure, a step towards more modern

The Minister of State for Local Government, Ervin Demo, presented the new platform for the development of underground infrastructure in urban areas, an initiative carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy and the Electronic and Postal Communications Authority (AKEP), which aims to improve the appearance and safety of cities.

During a meeting with representatives of municipalities, attended by Prime Minister Edi Rama, Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Enea Karakaçi, and the head of AKEP, Gentian Sula, Demo emphasized that local government is entering a new phase of development, closely linked to the European integration process.

According to him, this approach is part of the national program "Urban Renaissance 2.0", which is expected to be presented soon and aims to improve the quality of public spaces, the functionality of cities, local identity and compliance with European urban development standards.

Demo underlined that the development of municipalities should be based on integrated planning, where infrastructure, services and investments run in parallel, and not through fragmented interventions.

He highlighted as priorities the modernization of electronic communications networks and increasing the capacities of municipalities to design quality projects, with the aim of obtaining more funds from the European Union.

The Minister praised the progress made over the past decades in expanding communication networks, noting that citizens and businesses now have greater access to digital services. However, he acknowledged that rapid development has also brought problems, such as the non-standard placement of overhead cables and improvised poles, which violate urban aesthetics and create risks to public safety.

"Our challenge is to adapt these networks to contemporary standards. The transition from aerial cables to underground infrastructure is a necessary step for more functional and safer cities," said Demo.

He added that in every area where interventions will be carried out, the goal is not only to improve the urban landscape, but also to establish a new planning model, where infrastructure is designed from the development phase of the territory.

According to the minister, this initiative is expected to bring about a significant transformation in Albanian cities, while also contributing to meeting the standards required by Albania's integration process into the European Union.
