1 in 10 families with children relies on only one parent/ The burden of caring for young children continues to fall mainly on women

One in 10 Albanian families with children rely on a single parent, while in the vast majority of cases the responsibility for raising children falls on mothers. INSTAT data, analyzed on the occasion of International Children's Day, show that single-parent families constitute an important part of the social reality in the country.
According to Census data, single parents with children accounted for 10.3% of family nuclei in Albania. Meanwhile, the most common family nuclei continue to be married or cohabiting couples with children, which represent 52.2% of the total, followed by childless couples with 37.5%.
Statistics also show that there are over 60,000 single mothers and around 12,000 single fathers in the country, which proves that the burden of caring for and educating children continues to fall mainly on women.
Meanwhile, according to INSTAT data, 46,960 children up to the age of 14 live with a single parent. Of these, 24,298 are boys and 22,662 are girls.
The phenomenon is not just Albanian. According to data published by Eurostat, in the European Union, around 6.1 million families with children rely on a single adult, constituting 12.9% of all families with children.
According to Eurostat, more than four in five such families are headed by women. In 2025, 81.6% of single-parent families in the EU were headed by a mother, while only 18.4% were headed by a father.
There are also significant differences between European countries. The highest share of single-parent families is recorded in Estonia, where they account for 40.6% of families with children. It is followed by Lithuania with 32.7% and Latvia with 28.5%. On the other hand, the lowest percentages are recorded in Slovakia, Greece and Slovenia.
INSTAT and Eurostat data show that the two-parent family remains the dominant form of family organization, but thousands of children in Albania and millions more in Europe grow up in families where economic, social and educational responsibilities are borne by only one parent.
