Families and businesses dominate solar panels - Self-production of energy/

While the number of self-producers of electricity is increasing year by year, data shows that the vast majority of them are non-household consumers, with 68% of the total. In second place are household consumers with 1,089 self-producers, representing approximately 30% of the total. Meanwhile, public institutions count 69 self-producers, while non-budgetary institutions 16. The figures are reported by the Energy Regulatory Authority and include the period until the end of 2025, when the total number of consumers with self-producer status reached 3,551.

Meanwhile, their number is expected to increase further with the new compensation scheme for energy produced by photovoltaic panels.

With the new decision, the system moves from a “net metering” model to a “net billing” one. In practice, this means that excess energy delivered to the grid will no longer be compensated in kWh, but in monetary value.

The injected energy will be purchased by the supplier, while its value will be credited to the consumer's bill for the following month. The scheme applies to household and non-household consumers with installed capacity up to 500 kWp.

The price of the injected energy will be based on the average price of energy on the ALPEX exchange during the previous year, taking into account network and balancing costs. However, the decision stipulates that this price will not be lower than 80% of the energy tariff for household consumers.
