"Gateway to the Alps", the 100 million euro investment that aims to transform Shkodra and the north of the country

Parliament is expected to approve the loan for the strategic project "Gateway to the Alps", an investment program worth 100 million euros, financed by the European Investment Bank and the Albanian Government, which aims at the urban, economic and touristic transformation of Shkodra and the northern region of Albania.
The news was announced by the Mayor of Shkodra, Benet Beci, who described the program as one of the most important strategic projects for the sustainable development of the region.
According to Beci, after a preparatory process launched at the end of 2023, the Municipality of Shkodra, in collaboration with the Albanian Development Fund, local and international experts, has built a package of projects that aim to change the way of movement, living and economic development in the city and surrounding areas.
Among the main investments foreseen are the transformation of Shkodra's main boulevard into a multimodal green corridor, the completion of the Shkodra-Velipoja road corridor with modern standards, the modernization of public transport with 17 electric buses, as well as the creation of a bicycle network of more than 80 kilometers that will connect the city with the lake, the Buna River, Velipoja, the Alps and the Nënshkodra area.
The program also foresees the development of the Shkodra Museum System, integrating museums, urban itineraries and public spaces into a cultural and tourist network. The project includes the creation of the city museum, the museum and art gallery, as well as the restoration of the historical museum in the House of Oso Kukës.
Another important component of the investment package is related to the construction of public parking lots and improving traffic management, with the aim of increasing access and urban organization in the city and tourist areas.
According to Beci, these investments, together with other major projects currently being implemented, would bring Shkodra closer to the standards of modern European cities and would create conditions for economic and tourist development throughout the year. He thanked the Albanian Government, Prime Minister Edi Rama, the Albanian Development Fund and the experts engaged in supporting the realization of this development vision.
