Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming the new “energy” of the global economy, changing the way people work, learn and communicate. The latest data from Visual Capitalist, based on Microsoft estimates, shows that the use of AI in the workplace is growing at a strong pace worldwide, while Albania is moving above the global average in this digital transformation.

According to the report, 17.8% of the global working-age population regularly used artificial intelligence tools during the first quarter of 2026, spending at least 90 minutes per month with these platforms. Albania results slightly above this average, with 18.5% of working-age people using AI in professional activities, an increase of 2.7% compared to 2025. The same trend is also being seen in countries in the region, where artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming a part of everyday work and business.

The United Arab Emirates tops the global list, with over 70% of the working-age population using AI, followed by Singapore at 63%. These countries have invested heavily in digital infrastructure, technological education, and the integration of AI into administration, education, and the economy. Meanwhile, it is surprising that the United States, despite being considered the world center of artificial intelligence development, does not rank among the 20 countries with the highest usage.

Europe is also emerging as one of the most active regions in AI adoption. Norway, Ireland, France, Spain and the Netherlands all report usage rates above 40%, indicating that the technology is rapidly entering the European job market. Meanwhile, Asia is dominating global growth. According to Microsoft, 10 of the 15 fastest-growing markets for artificial intelligence are in this region.

Countries that are embracing artificial intelligence the fastest have several elements in common: developed internet, service-oriented economies, high digital skills, and large investments in cloud computing and technological education.

On the other hand, many countries in Africa and parts of South Asia continue to face obstacles such as lack of internet access, the costs of technological equipment, and limited integration of AI into business.

This could create a new global economic divide, where countries that adopt artificial intelligence the fastest could gain huge advantages in productivity and economic development over the next decade. Just as the internet transformed the global economy two decades ago, artificial intelligence is now being seen as the technology that will determine the winners and losers of the new digital age.
