EU sets final criteria for "Foundations"/ Albania advances in the European integration process

The European Union and Albania have entered a new phase of membership negotiations, with the definition of the closing criteria for Chapter 1 “Fundamentals”. This chapter includes justice, security, democratic institutions, administrative reform and economic criteria.
Albania has officially entered the phase of closing the negotiation chapters with the European Union, following the eighth intergovernmental conference held in Brussels.
The Council of the European Union announced that the country has fulfilled the interim criteria for Chapter 1 "Fundamentals", paving the way for the definition of the final criteria for this chapter.
"This group of chapters includes topics such as the functioning of democratic institutions and public administration reform, as well as economic criteria," the material published by the European Union states.
At the eighth intergovernmental conference held on Tuesday in Brussels, where Prime Minister Rama was present. During the press conference with the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, and the Cypriot Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, Rama described the Albania-EU Intergovernmental Conference as the “final beginning” of the integration journey, confirming that Albania has now entered the technical phase of closing the chapters.
The head of government expressed full conviction that the country will be a member of the EU within this decade.
Meanwhile, Commissioner Kos said that it is still under discussion whether there will be full membership, or whether Albania and Montenegro will not have decision-making rights.
