Albanians invest less abroad/ Exported capital shrinks, 55.4 million euros abroad in the first three months

Direct investments of Albanian residents abroad fell to 55.4 million euros during the first quarter of 2026, according to data from the Balance of Payments of the “Bank of Albania”. Compared to the same period a year ago, when investments reached 68 million euros, the flow has decreased by 12.6 million euros, or about 18.5%.
The decline is also noticeable compared to the end of 2025, when Albanians invested 70.3 million euros abroad. However, the long-term trend shows that interest in investing abroad has increased significantly in recent years.
The 2026 figure remains relatively high compared to most previous years. For example, in the first quarter of 2021, foreign investments were only 10.7 million euros, in 2022 they increased to 35.7 million euros, while in 2023 they reached 51.5 million euros.
Historical performance shows strong fluctuations. In some years, such as 2012, 2017, 2018 and 2019, the indicator has been negative, which means a decrease in assets invested abroad or a return of capital. After 2021, Albanian investments abroad entered a more noticeable growth phase.
From a structural point of view, the largest part of investments in the first quarter of this year was concentrated in equity and shares in investment funds, with 28.1 million euros, which constitute about half of the total. Reinvested earnings contributed with 19.7 million euros, while debt instruments with 7.6 million euros. This shows that investments by Albanians abroad are not limited to the purchase of financial assets, but are also related to the expansion of existing businesses and the reinvestment of profits in the economies where they operate.
