Over 130 thousand pensioners continue to work in Albania/ The market is aging. The number of employees over 65 years old is increasing

The number of Albanians who continue to be active in the labor market even after retirement age has increased during 2025, reflecting demographic changes, but also the need of many elderly people to provide additional income.
According to INSTAT's labor market report, the number of employed people over the age of 65 reached 130,274 in 2025, up from 119,862 the year before. This means that over 10,000 more people continued to work even after they had passed the official retirement age.
Data shows that the majority of them are self-employed in the agricultural sector. According to INSTAT, these individuals are considered employed even when they work on their own small farms and produce mainly for self-consumption.
The increase in the number of working seniors comes at a time when the country's population is gradually aging and the number of people of working age is shrinking. During 2025, the population aged 15 and over fell to around 2 million inhabitants, while the number of economically active people marked a slight decline.
On the other hand, the share of the population over 65 years of age in the group of economically inactive persons remains dominant. According to the report, 51% of the economically inactive population over 15 years of age consists of persons who have left the labor market due to retirement.
This phenomenon may be related both to the aging of the population and to the fact that a portion of retirees, especially in rural areas, continue their agricultural activity even after retirement. In many cases, farm work is not only seen as a source of income, but also as part of a way of life.
Although Albania continues to have one of the lowest unemployment rates in recent years, data shows that the labor market is increasingly affected by demographic changes and emigration. The increase in the number of retirees who continue to work is one of the clearest indicators of this transformation.
