Karakaçi in Pristina: Albania fulfilled Chapter 15 obligations on energy. More regional investments needed

'Albania has fulfilled all legal obligations foreseen in Chapter 15 of the European Union for the energy sector, ranking, together with Montenegro, among the most advanced countries in the region in this regard.'
The statement was made by the Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Enea Karakaçi, during the Energy Community Ministerial, held in Pristina, where the progress of the countries of the region in approximating legislation with European Union standards was discussed.
Karakaçi announced that the adoption of the new law on the electricity sector marks the fulfillment of a key obligation in the European integration process.
" Albania has adopted the electricity sector law, concluding the obligation arising from Chapter 15 of energy. This places our country in a very advanced position compared to other countries in the region," the minister said.
He emphasized that over 10% of the electricity produced in Albania now comes from solar sources, while during the last days of summer, production from photovoltaic plants has been so high that the Drini cascade has not been necessary to be put into operation.
According to Karakaç, the country currently has around 650 megawatts of installed solar energy capacity, while new projects in the field of solar and wind energy are under review.
During the ministerial, the minister also raised the need to accelerate the European Union's funding mechanisms for the Western Balkan countries.
"We need faster investments in energy interconnection infrastructure, in order to increase the integration of renewable energy into the system and interconnection with countries in the region ," he said.
In conclusion, Karakaçi underlined the importance of regional cooperation in ensuring energy security, emphasizing that Albania remains committed to strengthening partnerships with countries in the region and the European Union, especially in a period when energy challenges require coordination and joint action.
