Europe chooses Germany, Albania sticks to Italy/ Over a quarter of trade in 2025 was related to the neighboring country

On the economic map of Europe, Germany appears as the main center of trade gravity for most countries on the continent. However, Albania follows a different path, its largest trading partner remaining Italy.
Data published by Visual Capitalist (see here) for the period January-September 2025 show that a large proportion of European countries have Germany as their main trading partner. Among them are Austria, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, Sweden, Norway and Serbia, confirming the dominant role of the German economy in European trade.
In this panorama dominated by Germany, Albania remains among the countries that maintain a different economic orientation, having Italy as its largest trading partner. This pattern is not accidental and is related to geographical proximity, historical economic ties and the development of the tailoring industry, which for decades has been closely linked to the Italian market. On the entire European map, only Albania and Malta have Italy as their main trading partner,
Data for 2025 show that Italy accounts for 26.8% of Albania's trade, including both exports and imports. It is followed by China with 10.5%, reflecting its role in supplying goods and materials to the Albanian market.
Next on the list, Greece accounts for 7.6% of trade exchanges, while Turkey accounts for 7.3%. Germany, although dominant at the European level, ranks fifth for Albania with 6.7% of total trade.
The list of trading partners also shows the importance of the region to the Albanian economy. Kosovo accounts for 4% of trade exchanges, while Serbia occupies 2.6%, reflecting economic ties within the Balkan region.
In addition to Germany, several other countries play an important role in supplying European markets, such as Italy for Albania and Malta, the United States for Ireland and the United Kingdom, and France and Spain for the countries of Southwestern Europe.
