Challenges of the media sector - AMA gathers the European Platform of Regulatory

The European Platform of Regulatory Networks with the participation of 42 countries has started its work in Tirana, under the auspices of the Audiovisual Media Authority.

AMA Chairwoman, Armela Krasniqi, presented an overview of the main developments in the audiovisual landscape in Albania, focusing on the regulatory role of AMA, the legal framework and approximation with European standards.

Krasniqi also made a brief summary of the main activity during the 5 years of the AMA with 550 decisions, over 60% of them with unanimous agreement and with no decision contested by civil society, industry and political forces.

"During 5 years, decisions have been made on 38 fines for content violations and 44 fines for television piracy, with a total value of over 80 million lek," said Krasniqi, adding that out of 49 court cases completed in the Court of First Instance, 80% were won by AMA. Online platforms are not monitored by the institution. If you watch videos on different platforms that are not appropriate or contain images of criminal offenses, please report them to AMA. But we do not report platforms. Our legislation provides for the control of TVs and radios. AMA speaks through sanctions or fines, so to speak.

"We have imposed fines for violations, we have imposed 800 thousand euros in fines in total. We operate initially by attracting attention, because we are not the media police. First we attract attention, and then we have harsher sanctions."

The proceedings of the 63rd EPRA meeting were opened by the Chair of the EPRA Board, Stephanie Comey, and the activity will extend over two days, where the main media issues and problems will be discussed.
