New energy projects, 2.8 gigawatts - ERE: Need for investments in the transmission network, OST has planned 16 billion lek

Around 2.8 gigawatts of new energy capacity is expected to be added to the Albanian electricity system in the coming years, as projects are increasing significantly, mainly in solar energy.
Data from the Energy Regulatory Authority show that only from the projects that have signed agreements for grid connection and that are expected to be energized during 2026–2027, the capacity reaches around 830 MW. To these are added projects that have signed agreements or amendments during 2025, as well as a considerable number of projects that have received a preliminary opinion for connection to the transmission system.
The analysis of the projects shows that the development of the sector is being dominated by solar energy. The list of projects with agreements signed or amended during 2025 includes large photovoltaic parks such as Sunny Side Solar Park (122 MW), AKERNI Solar (100 MW), as well as a series of projects with capacities from 20 to 60 MW. Meanwhile, other important projects appear on this list, such as the Spillesw Wind Farm (72.6 MW) and the Roskovec TPP (170 MW), which remains the largest individual capacity under development.
This rapid expansion of capacities poses a direct challenge for the transmission network. According to the ERE, this will require a more dynamic development of the network to integrate these resources into the Albanian electricity system in the coming years. To this end, OST sh.a. has planned for the period 2025-2027, investments worth around 16 billion lek, which include the construction or reconstruction of substations, 220 kV and 400 kV lines, 110 kV lines, IT, cybersecurity, telecommunications, etc.
