Safety in Corridor VIII and Adriatic-Ionian - Transport Community, study on rest

The Transport Community will undertake a regional study to assess the current state of rest areas and safe parking along the TEN-T network in the Western Balkans, including Albania.

The study will analyze the availability, quality and compliance with European legislation of rest areas and safe parking areas for heavy transport vehicles along the TEN-T corridors, an initiative directly related to road safety, international transport and harmonisation with European standards.

For our country, this initiative is directly related to the strategic TEN-T corridors that pass through Albanian territory. One of them is Corridor VIII, which connects the port of Durrës with North Macedonia through the Durrës–Tirana–Elbasan–Qafë Thanë axis and is considered a key node of the east-west connection in the Balkans. Another strategic axis is the Adriatic-Ionian corridor, otherwise known as the Blue Corridor, which crosses the Albanian coast from north to south, connecting Montenegro with Greece. These corridors are part of the extended European TEN-T network and are considered priorities for regional integration and economic development.

Meanwhile, the Transport Community study aims to create a complete inventory of rest areas and safe parking areas on this network, including border crossings, identifying existing gaps, investment needs and compliance with European safety and service standards.

The document notes that in some countries in the region, reserved spaces for rest areas and safe parking have not yet been defined in territorial planning documents, which is seen as an obstacle to meeting European Union standards.
