High prices reduce oil consumption/ April marks the turning point, 52 thousand tons cleared

Albanian citizens appear to be limiting vehicle movements due to the high price of oil during this period.
Official data from the General Directorate of Customs shows that for the first time in so long, the amount of fuel imported and cleared in April decreased compared to April 2025.
Specifically, during the month just ended, 52 thousand tons of fuel were cleared from customs out of 60.7 thousand tons that were imported in April 2025, a decrease of 8.7 thousand tons. The figure is also lower than April 2024.
But even if we make a 4-month comparison, it is noted that for January-April 2026, 207.7 thousand tons of fuel were imported, about 11.7 thousand tons less than the same period a year ago.
Due to the conflict in the Middle East, March and the following months brought a significant increase in the price of oil and gasoline in the country, reaching levels of around 224 lek/liter, while they continue to fluctuate from day to day and the wholesale and retail ceiling levels are being determined by the Transparency Board activated for this purpose.
As for other excise goods, an increase in imports was noted during April for cigarettes, coffee and beer.
Specifically, 264 tons of cigarettes were imported, an increase of 31 tons compared to April 2025, and 962 tons of coffee, which also results in an increase of 149 tons compared to April last year.
Beer imports have also increased, with 4,630 tons cleared from 3,825 tons in April 2025.
While as a 4-month period, only the import of cigarettes shows an increase, while coffee and beer result in a decrease. Expectations are that due to the start of the summer tourist season, consumption will increase further for these goods, given that service activities will be in full function of domestic vacationers and foreign tourists.
