Heat wave, impossible without climate change - The planet's average temperature has increased by about 1.4 degrees Celsius

The record heatwave that has swept across Western Europe would have been "almost impossible" without human-caused climate change, which has made high nighttime temperatures this week 100 times more likely than they would have been just two decades ago, scientists said.
"In the studied region, this heat wave is the most severe on record," the World Weather Attribution climate science group said in an analysis. Global warming has worsened heat waves in Europe in just a few decades, the analysis found. A similar heat wave in June 1976 would have been about 3.5 degrees Celsius cooler than this one.
Of more than 800 European cities analysed, 45% have recorded, or are predicted to record, their highest levels of heat stress by the end of June, the research found. Heat stress occurs when the body cannot cool itself through sweating.
Scientists have confirmed through years of study that human-caused global warming is making heat waves more likely and more intense. Greenhouse gas emissions, mainly from the burning of coal, oil and gas, have raised the planet's average temperature by about 1.4 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial times in the 19th century, according to the World Meteorological Organization.
Europe is the fastest-warming continent in the world. The analysis notes that the health impacts of this heatwave are only just beginning to emerge, and pointed to a scientific study which found that more than 60,000 people died from heat-related causes in the summer of 2022.
Health risks during heatwaves are exacerbated by extreme nighttime temperatures, which hamper the body's ability to recover from daytime stress. In some parts of France, nighttime temperatures have remained above 20 degrees Celsius for more than a week - a temperature threshold known as a "tropical night" - with some nights recording minimum temperatures of almost 30 degrees Celsius.
