Biofuel criteria approved - Target, 7% renewable energy in transport by 2030

The Government has approved sustainability and greenhouse gas emission reduction criteria for biofuels and renewable fuels, completing the sub-legal framework for the implementation of the Law “On Biofuels in Transport”. The decision sets out the rules that will apply to the production, marketing, use and verification of biofuels in our country, in accordance with European Union legislation.
According to the decision, biofuels and other renewable fuels will have to meet detailed sustainability criteria, demonstrate greenhouse gas emission reductions and be certified through a special verification system. The new framework also foresees the creation of a national database, verification register and a certificate scheme for renewable transport fuels.
The decision also sets restrictions on the use of biofuels produced from food and fodder crops, while foreseeing the progressive increase in the contribution of advanced biofuels and biogas.
One of the main elements of the decision is related to the objectives for the gradual increase in the use of renewable energy in the transport sector, as foreseen in the law adopted last year. According to them, the minimum share of renewable energy to be put on the market by fuel suppliers is set at at least 1% of final energy consumption in transport in 2026. This level will increase by at least 1% each year, to reach no less than 7% by the end of 2030.
