Albania lost about 27 thousand inhabitants in one year / The population resulted in 2.33 million inhabitants in January of this year

Albania's population continues to shrink, as the country lost around 27,400 inhabitants during 2025 and dropped to 2.33 million inhabitants on January 1, 2026, according to data published by INSTAT, confirming the continuation of the trend of demographic decline driven mainly by emigration and population aging.
Meanwhile, last year the country's population amounted to 1.36 million inhabitants, recording a decrease of 1.16% this year.
The population decline was mainly influenced by emigration, which remained negative even in 2025. According to INSTAT, net migration resulted in -28,531 people, while the natural increase in the population remained positive, with 1,147 more births than deaths. However, this has not been enough to curb the country's demographic contraction.
The data also shows that the Albanian population is aging. The median age has increased from 44.3 years to 45 years, while the old-age dependency ratio has increased from 33.3% to 35.7%, reflecting an increasing burden on the working-age population.
At the regional level, Tirana remains the only region that has recorded an increase in population, with 0.7% compared to the previous year. On the other hand, the largest contraction was registered in the regions of Kukës and Shkodra, with 2.59% and 2.56% fewer inhabitants, respectively.
Tirana continues to be the most populous region in the country, concentrating around 32.8% of the total population. It is followed by Fier, Elbasan and Durrës, which hold the largest share in the geographical distribution of residents in Albania.
