Germany has consumed its natural resources by 2026 - Among the main causes, industrial branches with high energy consumption

Theoretically, Germany consumed enough natural resources for the entire year on Sunday. As part of the so-called "Earth Overburden Day", the Global Footprint Network calculates each year for individual countries and for the entire planet the days when the theoretically calculated natural raw materials for the entire year were consumed.
If all the people in the world consumed as many natural raw materials and released as much CO2 as the inhabitants of Germany, the Earth's annual biological capacity would have been exhausted in the first third of the year.
According to the NGO League for the Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND), Germany consumes far more resources than it should, mainly due to the high use of fossil fuels. The main causes include energy-intensive industrial branches, the construction sector, road traffic and mass animal husbandry.
The consequences of this development are already clearly felt, for example droughts, extreme rainfall or rising temperatures in cities.
Solar and wind energy, heat pumps and light, small and economical electric cars create independence, planning security and protect the climate.
In 2025, Earth Overload Day for Germany fell on May 3. The fact that this year the date has been moved up by a week is not a result of a more environmentally friendly lifestyle, but is mainly related to updated data and changes in the calculation methodology.
