Russia to stop Kazakh oil to Germany - Druzhba pipeline shutdown starting May 1

Russia will stop oil exports from Kazakhstan to Germany via the Druzhba pipeline starting May 1, sources said.

Reuters. According to them, for this change, the notice has been sent to Kazakhstan and Germany.

A halt to Kazakh flows would add more uncertainty to Germany's fuel supply, as the Iran war disrupts energy shipments from the Middle East.

Kazakhstan's oil exports to Germany via the Russian Druzhba pipeline totaled 2.146 million metric tons, or about 43,000 barrels per day, in 2025, a 44% increase from 2024. In the first quarter of 2026 they were 730,000 tons.

A complete shutdown would remove about 17% of the oil processed annually by Germany's PCK refinery - one of the country's largest. The refinery supplies fuel to 9 out of 10 cars in the Berlin and Brandenburg region.

Russia's energy ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he was not aware of any measures to halt oil exports.

"We will try to verify it," Peskov told reporters in a conference call. Neither Kazakhstan's energy ministry nor the German government responded to requests for comment. Russia's political and business relations with Germany have been damaged by the conflict in Ukraine. Russian oil supplies were halted after the war began.

Kazakhstan has been supplying oil to PCK via the northern branch of the Druzhba, which runs through Poland, since 2023, but supplies have been repeatedly disrupted by Ukrainian drone attacks on the Russian section of the pipeline. A spokesman for the Polish oil pipeline operator, PERN, told Reuters that the company was ready to transport oil for PCK’s non-Russian shareholders via the port of Gdansk if requested.
