President Trump Extends Ceasefire with Iran - Future Peace Talks Uncertain

US President Donald Trump said he would extend a ceasefire with Iran indefinitely to allow for further peace talks. But it remains unclear whether Iran or Israel, the US ally in the two-month war, will agree.
Trump said in a statement on social media that the US had agreed to a request by Pakistani mediators "to suspend our attack on the country of Iran."
But even as he announced what appeared to be a unilateral extension of the ceasefire, Trump also said he would continue the US Navy's blockade of Iranian seaborne trade, which is considered an act of war by Iran.
There was no response to Trump's announcement early Wednesday from senior Iranian officials. The Tasnim News Agency, affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said Iran had not requested an extension of the ceasefire and had repeated threats to break the US blockade by force.
With his announcement, Trump again backed down at the last minute from his threats to bomb Iran's power plants and bridges.
Hours before his announcement, Trump had told the CNBC news channel that he was not inclined to continue the temporary ceasefire and that the US military was "ready to act."
Before Trump's latest announcement, a senior Iranian official told Reuters that Iran's negotiators had been willing to participate in another round of talks if the US abandoned its policy of pressure and threats, and rejected negotiations aimed at surrender.
Iran has condemned the US Navy's intervention in capturing and seizing two Iranian merchant ships at sea as part of its blockade, the second earlier on Tuesday, with the foreign ministry accusing the US of "maritime piracy and state terrorism." The US, along with many other countries, has condemned Iran for obstructing freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
