May brought another increase in the number of foreign nationals entering Albania, but beyond the overall increase, data shows that the map of countries from which visitors come is gradually expanding. According to INSTAT, 1.14 million foreign nationals entered the country during the month, 15.9% more than in May last year.

Among the most notable developments of the month was the strong growth in inflows from several countries that until a few years ago had a limited weight. Lithuania recorded the largest expansion, with a 273% increase, while inflows from Denmark increased by 253%. High rates were also recorded from India, with almost 125% more inflows than a year earlier, indicating a growing presence of flows from less traditional markets for Albania.

In the same vein, entries also increased significantly from Poland (80.4%), Finland (83%), Slovakia (77.6%), Ireland (62.7%), Ukraine (59.8%) and Spain (56.4%). Although in absolute terms these countries remain far behind Albania's neighbors, the growth rates indicate an expansion of the geographical base of entries into the country.

The main weight of entries continues to be held by countries in the region. Kosovo remains the largest source of entries during May, followed by Italy, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Greece.

On the other hand, several European markets recorded contractions. Inflows from Austria fell by 14.5%, from Switzerland by 13.5%, from Germany by 9.1%, while there were also decreases from Serbia and Croatia. These fluctuations indicate that, in addition to expansion towards new markets, flows from some traditional countries have followed a weaker performance during the month.

May data suggest that, while neighboring countries continue to dominate the inflows of foreign nationals into Albania, the weight of Northern and Central European countries and more distant markets is gradually increasing, making the structure of inflows increasingly diverse.
