Albania prepares for digital lek - The new currency will have the same value as the regular lek, but will exist electronically

The digital Lek could be one of the biggest innovations brought by the new draft law for the Bank of Albania. For the first time, the law provides that, in addition to banknotes and coins, the Bank of Albania will have the exclusive right to issue the digital currency "Lek". This means that, in the future, Albanian money could exist not only in physical form, but also in a fully digital version, guaranteed by the central bank.
But what does this mean for citizens?
First of all, it is important to understand that the digital lek is not a cryptocurrency like Bitcoin or Ethereum. It will not fluctuate in value on the market and will not function as an investment. Instead, it will have the same value as the lek we use every day. A digital lek will be worth the same as a one lek banknote.
The only difference is in the form. Instead of citizens carrying money in their wallets, they can have it in an electronic wallet or on a special digital platform, developed according to the rules to be determined by the Bank of Albania. Payments can be made electronically, quickly and without the need to use physical money.
However, this does not mean that banknotes and coins will disappear. At least in the initial stages, the digital lek is expected to coexist with physical money, offering citizens an additional alternative for making payments.
The draft law creates the legal basis for the Bank of Albania to issue the digital lek in the future, but does not set a specific date for its launch. This will depend on future decisions, technological developments, security standards, and the readiness of the financial system to support this new form of money.
In fact, Albania is not the only one following this path. Dozens of central banks around the world are studying or testing their own digital currencies, with the aim of making payments faster, safer, and more efficient, while adapting to technological developments and the increasing use of electronic payments.
One model that is considered possible is that you log into the bank's application, ask for example to convert 10,000 lek from your account into 10,000 digital lek, the bank asks the Bank of Albania to issue these digital lek and you receive them in a digital wallet.
