World Cup final in smoke? - Unusual situation in New York. Rain this weekend

A thick layer of smoke from wildfires in Canada has worsened air quality in New York and New Jersey, where Spain and Argentina will meet in Sunday's 2026 World Cup final at MetLife Stadium.

Since Thursday morning, New York authorities have been issuing warnings. The air quality index reached levels considered unhealthy and, although it later improved slightly, the Department of Health still recommends precautions:

The city has begun distributing KN95 masks. But the detail that causes the most concern on the eve of Sunday is structural: the stadium where the final will be played, in East Rutherford, is not covered.

This means that both the players and the approximately 82,500 spectators will be directly exposed to the air conditions. Experts warn that a full day of exposure to this type of smoke is equivalent to smoking ten cigarettes.

Neither FIFA nor local authorities are currently considering postponing or canceling the match.

Forecasts suggest that rain expected over the weekend will help clear the air ahead of the match, which is scheduled to kick off at 9pm on Sunday. Meanwhile, air quality monitoring has joined team lineups as one of the most closely watched issues in the run-up to the final.
