Electrification of the Tirana-Durrës-Rinas railway / Parliament approves the loan of 11,620 million euros from the EBRD

The Parliament has ratified the loan of 11.620 million euros from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) that will be used for the electrification of the Tirana-Durres railway line and the railway connection with Tirana International Airport.
The above financing is envisaged as co-financing, with 50% of the total value covered by the Western Balkans Investment Framework grant, while the remaining part requires financing in the form of a loan. In his speech, the Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Enea Karakaçi, focused on the works being carried out.
According to the document, a loan in the amount of 11,620 million euros is necessary to enable the implementation of this strategic component, which significantly improves energy efficiency, reduces operating costs, lowers emissions and brings the Albanian railway infrastructure closer to European standards.
This funding aims to increase the efficiency, sustainability and overall performance of rail transport between Durrës, Tirana and the airport connection. The minister also provided a summary of investments in the Albanian railway network.
Electric trains could provide faster and more reliable service, promoting greater use of public transport. An increase in the use of public transport could lead to reduced congestion and lower emissions from personal vehicles.
