EU monitors project in Zvërnec, Kos: Environmental standards must be fully

Prime Minister Edi Rama announced today that the European Commission has been acquainted in detail with the documented administrative process regarding the project in the Sazan and Zvërnec areas, sharing on social networks the statement of the Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos.

According to Rama, the Commissioner's statement contains a fact-based approach and clarifies the European Union's position on the project and the environmental standards that must be respected.

In a press statement from Brussels, Kos praised Albania as one of the vanguard countries in the European Union enlargement process, highlighting the country's significant progress in environmental protection.

The Commissioner announced that the European Commission is in constant contact with the Albanian authorities and is closely following developments related to the project in the Pishporo-Nartë area.

According to her, any project under development in Albania must be in line with the legal framework and standards of the European Union, especially with the requirements of Chapter 27 of the accession negotiations, which relates to the environment and climate change.

Kos stressed that before the closure of this chapter, currently planned by the end of 2027, issues related to the project must be fully clarified.

She confirmed that the European Commission has received guarantees from the Albanian government that a full environmental impact assessment will be carried out and that European standards will be respected.

"The accession process is legally and politically binding and subject to continuous monitoring. This constitutes the strongest guarantee for the protection of nature and the environment in Albania," said the commissioner.

Kos also praised the respect for the right to protest in Albania, describing it as a fundamental right of countries aiming for membership in the European Union.

The Commissioner underlined that the European Union will continue to monitor the fulfillment of environmental standards, while encouraging the Albanian authorities to continue reforms within the framework of the European integration process.
