The more schooling, the less entrepreneurship/ Half of young people with higher education are employed, but only a few dare to become self-employed

The latest data on the Albanian labor market in 2024 sheds light on an interesting phenomenon that is closely related to the educational level of young people. For the 15-24 age group, the overall employment rate reaches 30.2%, while 10.8% of employees are self-employed. This average, however, hides profound differences when we evaluate the data by education.
The figures clearly show that education is a decisive factor for employment. Among young people with higher education, the employment rate reaches 50.9%, proving that half of them manage to enter the labor market. But, paradoxically, this group is even less inclined towards self-employment, with only 6.1% of employees in this category working for their own account.
At the secondary education level, the employment rate is 41.6%, while 11.5% of employees choose the path of self-employment. This makes this category more balanced, with a noticeable trend towards both formal employment and individual entrepreneurship.
The picture is bleaker for young people with 8-9 years of education. Only 17.1% of them manage to find employment, but on the other hand 13.4% of employees in this category are self-employed. This contrast suggests that, in the absence of formal employment opportunities, self-employment is often seen as the only way out for this group.
This phenomenon is related to several reasons. Young people with higher education usually prioritize continuing their studies, which leaves no room for self-employment. Meanwhile, those with secondary, or 9-year, education often pursue vocational or practical training, which creates more opportunities for self-employment.
Comparing these figures highlights a clear trend: the higher the level of education, the greater the likelihood of being employed regularly, but at the same time the lower the predisposition for self-employment.
