In three years, an average of 84 Albanians per day gained Italian citizenship/ During 2021-2023, over 92 thousand Albanians became Italian citizens

The Albanian diaspora is not measured only by the high number of citizens living abroad, but also by the pace of its integration in the host countries. INSTAT data show that, in addition to the large size of the Albanian diaspora, a part of it is also going through another phase, acquiring citizenship in the countries where they live. The report on the diaspora published by INSTAT itself emphasizes that citizenship should be read as an indicator of long-term integration in the host countries, not simply as migratory movement in the classical sense.
The main weight of this process is clearly visible in Italy. According to the INSTAT report, in 2021, 22,493 Albanians acquired Italian citizenship, in 2022 this figure increased to 38,129, while in 2023 it results in 31,728. In total, in three years, over 92 thousand Albanians acquired Italian citizenship, with an average of about 30,783 people per year, or about 84 per day. This makes Italy the country where the process of transition from immigration to legal and civic integration appears most strongly.
Italy is followed by Greece, where the pace of acquiring citizenship also remains high. The data shows that 7,736 Albanians acquired Greek citizenship in 2021, 9,631 in 2022 and 9,943 in 2023. This means that in three years, over 27 thousand Albanians acquired Greek citizenship, or an average of about 25 people per day. Due to the history of Albanian migration to Greece, these figures reflect a consolidated diaspora, which is increasingly connected to the host country even in a formal sense.
Beyond Italy and Greece, the report shows that Albanians continue to gain citizenship in other European countries, but on a much smaller scale. In Germany, the figures move from 480 to 465 and 485 cases in 2021-2023, in France from 465 to 474 and 391, while in Sweden from 384 to 581 and 717 cases. Belgium also shows an increase, from 365 cases in 2021 to 588 in 2023. This shows that, although Italy and Greece remain the main centers of formal integration of the Albanian diaspora, the process is also spread to other countries in Western and Northern Europe.
