The number of pupils and students in Albania has decreased during the academic year 2025-2026. According to the latest data published by the Institute of Statistics, approximately 399 thousand pupils and students were registered in the education system, or 1.7% less compared to the previous year.
Data show that pre-university education continues to remain the mainstay of the education system in the country. During this academic year, about 66 thousand students were enrolled, with an increase of 0.7% compared to the previous year. The vast majority of them, about 85.8%, attend education in public institutions, confirming once again the importance that public education continues to have in Albania. According to statistics, the majority of those enrolled were boys.
On the other hand, upper secondary education has marked a slight decline. In total, about 88.8 thousand students were registered, or 0.4% less compared to the previous academic year. Within this level, a considerable interest in vocational education is noted. About 19.4% of students have chosen vocational schools, while girls make up 17.2% of those registered in this sector.
Meanwhile, 314 students are enrolled in non-tertiary post-secondary education. According to the data, 46.2% of them are female, while 53.8% are male.
Universities in the country have registered a total of 115.7 thousand students during the academic year 2025-2026 with a decrease of 0.4%. Of these, 60 thousand students are pursuing Bachelor's programs and 56.8% of those enrolled are female. Meanwhile, almost 48 thousand students are enrolled in Master's programs, where the dominance of girls is even higher, with 67.6% of the total.
Statistics also show that the most preferred field of study by Albanian students remains “Business, Administration and Law”, where about 25.2% of students in total study. This field has continued to dominate for years due to the wider employment opportunities in the private sector and administration.
It is followed by the field of “Health and well-being” with 22.2%, reflecting the growing interest in medical professions and health services. Meanwhile, “Engineering, manufacturing and construction” accounts for 16.9% of registrations, an indication that technical sectors and infrastructure are increasingly attracting young Albanians.
