During the third quarter, births exceeded deaths/ Korça in demographic decline, Tirana remains the "engine" of the population
Albania's population during the third quarter of 2025 has recorded a positive natural increase, with 1,347 more births than deaths, an important indicator for the country's demographic development. This shows an improvement in the balance between births and deaths, reflecting a positive trend for population growth, despite the demographic challenges of recent years.
The number of births during this quarter was around 6,408, marking a slight decrease of 1.2% compared to the same period in 2024. Meanwhile, the number of deaths has decreased significantly, reaching 5,061 cases, a decrease of 11.6% compared to the third quarter of last year.
According to the regions, the distribution of the natural increase has been different. Seven regions have recorded positive natural increase, while five other regions have recorded negative values. The capital, Tirana, continues to have the greatest weight in demographic growth, becoming the main “engine” of population development, with 1,238 more births than deaths. On the other hand, the region with the lowest natural increase is Korça, which shows a slower pace of natural population growth.
In terms of births, Tirana once again leads with the highest number, while Gjirokastra has recorded the lowest number in the country, with only 81 births. In terms of deaths, the region with the lowest number is Kukës, with 100 cases, while Tirana records the highest number of deaths, with 1,271 cases, which is directly related to the size of the population in the capital.
This indicator of positive natural addition is a good sign for the country's demographic balance and shows the importance of investments in health, social care, and policies that support families and population growth in smaller counties.
