Cultural heritage, in focus - Agreement signed between the Ministry of Culture

Intangible cultural heritage is becoming a strategic priority for Albania. A memorandum has been signed between the Ministry of Culture and the Albanian-American Development Foundation to support the second package of nominations for intangible cultural heritage at UNESCO. The Ministry of Tourism and Culture, in partnership with the AADF, has structured a process that aims to register four new elements, guaranteeing financial and technical support for this purpose.

"This cooperation represents another strategic step for heritage, aiming at the preparation and submission of four new files for registration with UNESCO. The process is expected to be structured and supported both financially and technically. The goal is to strengthen Albania's presence in the international cultural arena, and also aims to create a sustainable model of further inter-institutional cooperation, with communities, art lovers, artisans, and all those who are passionate about this field, this important part of our lives. The importance of this agreement does not lie only in the objective of registration with UNESCO, it also aims to create a strong cultural model, we are saying, through cooperation between public institutions and strategic partners such as ADSA, and thus guarantee national expertise, audiovisual and digital documentation, financial support, expertise and others. Among other things, the ministry will then coordinate the working groups and guarantee the institutional fulfillment of the process. Cooperation strengthens national capacities "In preserving tradition, it also contributes to the international promotion of Albania and here it has a lot to do with the aspect of the added tourist value it generates," said Blendi Gonxhja, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports.

According to the head of the Albanian-American Development Foundation, Michael D. Granoff, this investment is fully in line with the interests and objectives of the United States to promote Albanian cultural wealth throughout the world.

“If you look at our foundation, the Albanian-American Development Foundation (AADF), you can easily ask the question: what role should cultural heritage preservation play in what we do? In a way, what is the interest of the United States, in general, in preserving cultural heritage in Albania? And it turns out that, in fact, Albania’s interest in preserving and developing its cultural heritage is exactly in line with the objectives of the United States, that Albania not only has a greater appreciation for its cultural heritage, but that it is able to share this heritage with the rest of the world. And this is a quite unique opportunity. A unique opportunity for citizens here, I think, and a quite unique opportunity for people around the world. When tourists come here, we have the opportunity to show them together what Albanian cultural heritage looks like, how rich it is over time ,” he said.

The agreement envisages the creation of a sustainable cooperation model, which, in addition to public institutions, will include artisans, local communities and experts in the field.
