Tirana, safer than London and Paris/ Safety Index ranks Albania at a good level in the Balkans and the continent

The 2026 safety index published by Numbeo places Tirana in 74th place in Europe with 59.9 points, classifying the Albanian capital at an average level of safety compared to the 115 cities included in the ranking.
At a closer level to Albania are several regional capitals such as Belgrade with 62.2 points and Sofia with 61.4 points, which nevertheless remain several places higher in the ranking. On the other hand, the Albanian capital is safer than several other cities in the region, such as Sarajevo with 55.9 points and Skopje with 54 points.
At the bottom of the rankings are some of the largest European metropolises, including Paris with 42.1 points, London with 44.7 points and Brussels with 44.3 points, while the least safe cities include Naples with 37.8 points and Birmingham with just 36 points. These results are often associated with major urban challenges, high population density and more pronounced social problems.
The top of the rankings are clearly dominated by cities in Northern and Western Europe, which continue to exhibit the highest standards of urban safety. The Hague ranks first with 78.8 points, followed by Trondheim and Tallinn, while the top 10 also includes cities such as Munich, Ljubljana and Zurich. These cities are characterized by very low crime rates, functional institutions and a high standard of living, factors that directly affect the perception and reality of safety.
Overall, the data shows a clear geographical divide, with Northern and Western European cities dominating in terms of safety, while Southern Europe and parts of the Balkans show lower levels. Within this context, Tirana is positioned as a city with average safety, better than some capitals in the region. This position suggests that, although the security situation in Albania remains relatively stable, there is still considerable room for improvement compared to the safest cities in Europe.
