Albanian startups "stuck" in commercializing ideas - Training and brand registration become mandatory for funding beneficiaries

Most startups during 2024 and 2025, even when they had intellectual property, were unable to commercialize it.
This was stated by the Director of the Innovation4Albania Agency, Arjan Ymeri, at an event organized by the General Directorate of Industrial Property, on the occasion of World Intellectual Property Day, who emphasized that even when you have intellectual property, you must know how to protect it by adhering to certain rules. In the future, it will be mandatory for startups to participate in the Agency's training on this issue and to register their brand.
"In 2026, we had 1220 applications from 500 last year, a very large number, and from this year, all those who will be funded, whether facilitators or companies or universities that are helping startups, whether startups that will be funded by the Agency, will be required to not only undergo training, but also register the brand and trademark according to standards through DPPI ," said the Director of the Innovation4Albania Agency.
The General Directorate of Intellectual Property (DGIP) has also signed an agreement with the European Patent Organization or its counterpart office in Greece to assist SMEs, universities, and startups in patent search reports.
"In the field of patents, the DPPI, in addition to the agreement it has had for years with the European Patent Organization regarding the drafting of the search report offered by this Organization and it is worth reiterating again in this meeting today, that for SMEs, universities and startups, the European Patent Organization offers an 80% reduction in the value paid for the search report. A month ago, the General Directorate of Industrial Property signed an agreement of this nature with the Greek counterpart office. In the end, it is up to the applicant to choose where to receive the service for drafting the patent search report", stated the Acting Director General of the DPPI.
During 2025, there were 8 patent applications from Albania at the European Patent Organization and 3 grants were awarded.
