Pensions in Albania, how much do women benefit? About 14% less than men at the

Women in Albania continue to retire with lower pensions than men. Based on the calculation based on data from the Social Security Institute, the gap is around 14.3%, which means that women benefit on average less than men when they enter old-age pension. According to ISSH figures, the average monthly amount of new old-age pensions is 18,021 lek for men and 15,438 lek for women.

This result is in line with the European picture. According to Eurostat's table for European countries, the average gap in the European Union is 24.5%. This means that, at European level, women receive almost a quarter less pension than men. In some countries the difference is even deeper, such as in Malta, the Netherlands, Austria or Luxembourg, while in others it is lower, such as in Estonia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic or Slovenia.

If the figure for Albania were placed in the same comparative table, the country would result below the EU average and close to the group of countries with a relatively lower gap. With a difference of around 14.3%, Albania would be close to countries such as Poland (14.5%), Latvia (15.0%) and Denmark (15.6%), while it would stand better than a large part of Western and Southern European countries.

However, we need to make an important methodological clarification. The figure for Albania does not come directly from Eurostat, but is calculated from the SSHI report on new old-age pensions. This means that it is not entirely the same as the standard Eurostat indicator, which refers to the population aged 65 and over, as there is data for Albania up to 2023, when the gap was estimated at 15.6%.

In social terms, this means that older women enter a more fragile economic phase. When the pension is lower, it also becomes more difficult to afford basic expenses, medicines, healthcare and living costs. For this reason, the pension gap is not just a gender statistic, but a direct indicator of economic inequality in old age.
