Rama: Albania officially opens the closing phase of negotiations for EU membership
Prime Minister Rama described the phase of closing the chapters of negotiations with the EU as the most important moment for Albania. He emphasized that the country has entered the final stage towards full membership. In the podcast “FLASIM”, Rama said that the integration process is advancing and the negotiations are expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
''The week we left behind, precisely on May 26, as if by an irony or a smile of fate, 30 years after May 26 of violence, of the bloodshed of the opposition, of the theft of votes and the sealing of an autocratic rule with dictatorial features in Albania, we came to the day when Albania entered the new and final phase of its European journey, closing the phase of opening the negotiation chapters and opening the phase of closing them.
So, on May 26, Albania climbed to the highest point ever in this difficult historical climb and now the peak where we will climb together and place the red and black flag of Ismail Qemali and Gjergj Kastrioti, giving meaning and giving full sense to a long history of dreaming about the European Union today, but for what was the space of the sun rising from the west until yesterday, it is closer than ever.
It is an extremely meaningful moment in this path towards membership and is, at the same time, an absolute certification of a long period of hard work. It is a moment that certainly comes with great satisfaction, but at the same time it also comes with great responsibility, as this is not simply a success on the path of negotiations and this is not a date on the integration calendar, but it is a result of the profound transformations that our country has made in the last decade, of extremely difficult and challenging reforms, of the finding that institutions have already been established, but at the same time of the necessity to consolidate the rule of law, to consolidate the space of individual freedoms and to consolidate what is the essence, the effort for equality before the law.
It is significant that the European Union confirms the fact of the successful fulfillment of all tasks to date, precisely in those areas related to justice, the fight against corruption and the functioning of democratic institutions, and as much a reason to be proud as a reason to feel the full weight of responsibility in this final phase, which is not the easiest, but the most difficult, for which we have a calendar agreed with the European Commission, to successfully achieve the closure of negotiations by the end of 2027. We have an intermediate space in 2028 and we have the major objective of Albania's membership in the European Union within 2030'' - said Prime Minister Rama.
