Wind energy, 70 applications for power plants - AKBN: Interest from investors,

While our country still has no wind farms in operation, data from the National Agency for Natural Resources shows that interest in investments has increased. Referring to figures from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy, AKBN reports that there are 70 applications for the construction of wind farms, while the potential for this energy source is great.

AKBN also announced that seven contracts for wind energy production projects, currently in the study phase, have been signed by the end of 2025. In parallel, the agency has completed the technical review of five other projects, which are currently undergoing procedures for obtaining construction permits.

According to a report published by this ministry, the country has considerable potential for wind energy production, with wind speeds exceeding 8 to 9 meters per second in many areas. The most favorable areas are identified along the coastline and mountain ridges, especially in the south of the country. More specifically, areas of interest for wind energy development include Shkodra, Kukës, Lezha, Durrës, Kavajë, Fier, Karavastë, Vlorë, Saranda, Korçë and Tepelena.

The report emphasizes that the average annual wind speed in the Albanian territory ranges from 3.3 to 9.6 m/s, while the areas most suitable for energy production have average values from 5.8 to 7 m/s.

Meanwhile, according to estimates by the International Renewable Energy Agency, Albania has a competitive wind energy potential of up to 7,400 MW. Meanwhile, the organization's energy transition scenario predicts that by 2030 the country could reach an installed capacity of 616 MW of wind energy.
