Greece to produce gallium - 340 million euro investment for critical raw

A €340 million investment, enabling Greece to produce gallium to cover 100% of the EU's needs, was approved by the inter-ministerial committee for strategic investments. Gallium is a critical raw material used in advanced technologies such as semiconductors, defense systems, Artificial Intelligence applications and modern photovoltaic systems.

At the national level, as announced by the government spokesperson, the investment strengthens Greece's industrial base and creates high value-added jobs. At the same time, it constitutes an emblematic initiative of European importance, as it contributes decisively to Europe's competitiveness, security of supply and geo-economic protection.

The project is fully in line with the EU's goals for critical raw materials and strategic autonomy. The investment will be carried out in cooperation with the US within the framework of the strategic energy relationship between the two countries, building on the already existing cooperation in the field of hydrocarbons and natural gas.

Currently, China has 99% of global gallium production. It is estimated that Greece will be able to produce 50 tons of gallium per year by 2027, while the US needs 20-25 tons per year.
