Tourism increases visits to art and culture institutions/ They attract around 788 thousand tourists, the most visited being the Gjirokaster Castle
According to data from INSTAT for 2024, a total of about 1,282 performances and premieres were organized in all major art institutions. The balance is positive, as an increase of 9.1% was recorded compared to 2023. Even in relation to the number of visitors, the trend is again positive, with an increase of 30.7%. In total, there were about 1.3 million visitors, with foreign visitors dominating, accounting for about 60% of this number.
In total, these institutions were visited by about 788 thousand people. Meanwhile, in 2024, Albanians' spending on entertainment, culture and religious affairs accounted for about 1.56% of public spending, while in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) they accounted for 0.45%.
Regarding the subjects visited, during this year around 468 thousand visits to museums were recorded. Compared to 2023, this number represents an increase of 19.7%. The castles were visited by around 344 thousand people, marking an increase of 27% compared to the previous year. While the archaeological parks resulted as the most visited, with around 501 thousand visitors and an increase of 46.2%.
In all categories, it is noted that foreign visitors significantly dominate, especially in forts and other monuments, where they account for 69% of total visitors. On the other hand, museums also recorded about 60% of visits from foreigners. Meanwhile, in archaeological parks, foreign visitors also constitute the majority, with 52.5% of total visits.
Among the most visited institutions, the first place is held by the Gjirokastra Castle with 20% of visits. Then come the Butrint National Park with 15.3% and the “Gjergj Kastrioti” Museum with 13.3%. On the other hand, the least visited are the Shkodra Archaeological Park and the Apollonia Archaeological Park.
The dominant presence of foreign visitors indicates a growing interest in Albanian history and cultural values, placing Albania increasingly on the map of attractive tourist destinations in Europe. This trend represents an important opportunity for expanding the cultural offer and investing in tourism infrastructure.
