Albania, among the leaders for women in government/ 54% of government positions are held by women, well above the EU average
Eurostat has published some data on gender representation in politics. What stands out is that almost all countries have seen a significant increase in women's involvement in politics in recent years.
In Albania, a clear increase in women's representation has also been observed. From 7.1% in 2005, this indicator increased to 22.9% in 2015 and reached 34.3% in 2025, marking the highest level recorded so far.
There was also an increase in the participation of women in national governments in 2025. Women held 31.9% of seats in the governments of European Union countries, an increase of 4.2 percentage points compared to 2015.
What is particularly striking is that Albania ranks very high in terms of women holding government positions. Albania holds third place with 54%, indicating a significant presence of women in government structures. On the other hand, Finland holds first place with 60%, while Iceland ranks behind it with around 54%.
If we focus on the region, Serbia ranks behind Albania in terms of women's representation in government with 32.3%. It is followed by Bosnia & Herzegovina and Montenegro, while Kosovo and North Macedonia have the lowest representation, with 15.3% and 13.2%, respectively.
Equality was achieved in Sweden (50.0%), while in France almost half of the members of the government were women (48.6%). In contrast, Hungary had no women in its national government, while Romania had only 10.5% and the Czech Republic 11.8%.
In most EU countries, the share of women in national governments has increased since 2015. Finland recorded the largest increase with +26.7 percentage points, followed by Lithuania (+20.4 percentage points) and Estonia (+17.5 percentage points). On the other hand, decreases were recorded in six EU countries: Romania (-24.5 percentage points), Slovenia (-7.7), the Czech Republic (-5.8), the Netherlands (-4.2), Belgium (-1.1) and Poland (-0.8).
Overall, the data show a positive trend towards increasing women's representation in politics, although differences between countries still remain visible.
