The old-age dependency ratio, defined as the percentage of elderly individuals (aged 65 and over) relative to the working-age population (people aged 20 to 64), has increased significantly in the last 20 years.
In the EU, on January 1, 2024, the ratio was 37%, indicating that there were less than 3 adults of working age for every elderly person. But how do these data present themselves for Albania? On January 1, 2024, the elderly dependency ratio was 31.1%. According to INSTAT data, this ratio increased in January of this year, reaching 33.3%, getting closer to the EU average. But how do the data for 2024 present themselves in comparison to Albania and other countries in the region and Europe?
As for the region, the country with the highest ratio of elderly people is Serbia with 38.6%, exceeding the European Union average. Meanwhile, Montenegro and North Macedonia, according to statistics, result in a lower ratio, 28.1% and 30.4%, respectively.
The French outermost regions, such as Mayotte (6.1%) and Guyana (13.8%), as well as the capital region of Byen København in Denmark (17.8%), had the lowest old-age dependency ratios for Europe.
Meanwhile, the Belgian coastal region of the Arrondissement of Veurne had the highest old-age dependency ratio (72.8%). Alto Tâmega e Barroso in northern Portugal (71.4%) and Evrytania in central Greece (71.1%) were the only other regions in the EU where this ratio exceeded 70%.
