In 2025, an average of 4 road accidents per day/ Lezha and Gjirokastra, with the highest number in relation to population

According to the latest INSTAT data for 2025, 1,375 road accidents occurred in our country. Compared to 2024, this represents a significant decrease of 17.5%, indicating a positive trend. However, when we look more closely, it turns out that on average 3 to 4 accidents occur in the country every day, an indicator that shows that the challenge remains present and more work needs to be done to prevent them.
Analysis of the data by gender shows interesting differences: the number of women injured or killed in accidents decreased by 20.3%, while for men this decrease is smaller, at 12.7%. This difference may be related to the behavior of drivers and their level of exposure to traffic. Statistics show that driver behavior remains the main cause of most accidents in the country, including high speed, failure to comply with traffic rules and careless use of the vehicle.
When we analyze the number of accidents by region, Tirana emerges as the region with the highest absolute number of accidents, an expected fact considering that it is the capital and the most populous city in the country. However, when we look at the ratio of accidents in relation to the population (accidents per 1,000 inhabitants), the situation changes: the region of Lezha emerges as having the highest ratio of accidents per population, followed by Gjirokastra, while Korça results in having the lowest number of accidents as a percentage of the number of inhabitants. This shows that even smaller regions, although with fewer accidents in absolute numbers, can face serious challenges in managing road safety for their inhabitants.
In summary, although 2025 showed a decrease in accidents compared to the previous year, the statistics highlight the continued need for driver awareness and education as well as stricter traffic control.
