Albanians live the longest in the Balkans/ We live an average of 79 years, women lead by even more
A recent report published by Worldometer sheds light on the average life expectancy of people in different countries of the world, including historical data from 1955 to 2025. According to this report, Albania ranks in a relatively favorable position compared to other countries. The average life expectancy in Albania is 79.95 years, with women living on average to 81 years, while men live to about 78 years. This data ranks the country in 47th place out of a total of 201 countries in the world.
In the Balkan region, the situation is presented with slight differences between countries. Bosnia and Herzegovina is in 58th place with an average life expectancy of 78 years. In this country, women live to be 81 years old, while men live to be around 74.8 years old. North Macedonia is ranked 69th, with an average life expectancy of 77.6 years, where for women this figure reaches 79.8 years and for men 75.4 years. Montenegro is in 71st place, with an overall life expectancy of 77 years.
Here too, a gender gap similar to neighboring countries is observed: women live an average of 80 years, while men live 74 years. Serbia, on the other hand, is at the bottom of the list for the Balkans and in 75th place globally, with an average life expectancy of 77.1 years. Women live around 80 years, while men live an average of 73.8 years. What is striking is the fact that Albania leads the Balkan region in terms of average life expectancy, leaving behind all neighboring countries.
The report also reveals global trends, with Hong Kong topping the list for the highest life expectancy, with an average of 85.7 years. Japan and South Korea are close behind, with average life expectancies of 85 and 84.5 years, respectively.
On the European continent, three of the countries with the highest life expectancies are Switzerland, Italy and Spain. Switzerland leads with an average of 84.23 years, followed by Italy with 84.03 years and Spain with 83.96 years. These countries are distinguished by strong healthcare systems, high social welfare and a traditional Mediterranean diet known for its health benefits.
