Albania leads Europe in commercial flights/According to Eurostat, air traffic has increased significantly after the pandemic

Albania continues to be confirmed as one of the fastest growing tourism and air transport markets in Europe. Data published by Eurostat show that our country has recorded the highest increase in commercial flights compared to the pre-pandemic period, leaving behind not only the region, but also all European countries.
According to statistics, during the month of April alone, Albania recorded a 219.6% increase in the number of commercial flights compared to the same period before the pandemic. This is the highest figure recorded in Europe and shows the strong expansion of the Albanian air market, driven by the growth of tourism, the entry of low-cost companies and the ever-increasing demand for travel to Albania.
The first months of the year have also shown the same positive trend. In March and February, the increase in flights reached about 126% and 165%, while January recorded a more moderate increase of 115%. Throughout the first four months of the year, Albania has maintained its position as the country with the highest growth in air traffic in Europe and the region.
Albania's strong performance reflects not only the expansion of the tourism sector, but also the country's return to an increasingly important destination for international airlines. The increase in direct destinations, the expansion of Tirana Airport and the growing interest of foreign tourists have significantly influenced this trend.
The Balkan region has also shown positive results in recent months. After Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina ranks second in the region with a 62.7% increase in commercial flights. Serbia holds third place with around 41% increase, while North Macedonia and Montenegro have also recorded good performances, with 36% and 27% increase in flights respectively. For Montenegro, this marks a significant recovery, as the country had recorded a significant decline in air traffic in recent months.
At the European level, after Albania, one of the strongest performances was recorded by Iceland with an increase of 126%, while Slovakia and Malta also recorded significant increases, with 53% and 49% respectively.
On the other hand, not all European countries have followed the same positive trend. Several countries have recorded significant declines in commercial flights compared to the pre-pandemic period. Slovenia results in the largest decline of -29%, followed by Sweden with -26.4%, Latvia with -25.4%, Germany with -20.2% and Finland with -17.9%.
The data clearly shows that Albania is experiencing a rapid expansion of the aviation and tourism market, becoming one of the most dynamic destinations in Europe for air travel.
