Milk production fell by 6.6% during 2024/ Negative change also for cheese, marked a decrease of 9.9%

According to data published by INSTAT for 2024, a total of about 95 thousand tons of milk were collected in the Albanian territory. Compared to the previous year, this amount decreased by 6.6%.
The highest decrease was recorded in sheep's milk, which suffered a decrease of 9.7%, however, about 12 thousand tons were collected. Cow's milk managed to collect 75 thousand tons, marking a decrease of 6.5%. While goat's milk was in smaller quantities, about 8 thousand tons, and recorded a decrease of 3.1%.
Of the total milk, nearly 123 thousand tons were used for direct human consumption, while the majority was for further processing.
In the consumption structure, processed whole milk accounted for the largest share with 88.2%, while semi-skimmed milk accounted for 7.3%. Raw and skimmed milk accounted for 4% and 0.5%, respectively.
Also, the balance of dairy by-products was negative. Cheese production fell by 9.9%, falling to 10,487 tons. On the other hand, during 2024 in Albania, 46.8% of cheese production was soft cheese, which is the most preferred for quick consumption and cooking. Semi-hard cheese accounted for 28% of the total, while fresh products accounted for 15.5%, and hard cheese accounted for 10% of the total production. This structure shows the diverse diversity of cheese products consumed and produced in the country.
Regarding butter production, it reached 657 tons, of which 96.4% was traditional butter, which preserves traditional processing methods and is preferred for its characteristic quality and taste. While melted butter accounted for 3.6% of total butter production.
Overall, data for 2024 show a general downward trend in the production and processing of milk and its products in Albania, which may be related to various factors such as climatic conditions, changes in the agricultural sector, or even market demand.
